These ribsare tapered and have the greatest depthat the center, where it is 4 in. The gapbetween the sides of the rib is 2% it is tapered from a depth of 4 in. atthe center to V/y in. at the side of thecar. There are two of these ribs spaced26J4 in. apart between centers and with THE LEWIS TRUCK Five hundred of these cars are equippedwith the Westinghouse \ draft gearand the Lewis truck as made by theAmerican Steel Foundries. The trucks. VIEW OF LEWIS SI.\-WI1EELED TRUCK. are of the six-wheeled type and are fittedwith clasp brakes. The side frames are formed of twosteel castings; one of which has pedestal is about 23,300 lbs., of which one-half iscarried by this pin. If 50 per cent, beadded to the static load for runningstresses, it puts the shear on these pinsat almost exactly 10,000 lbs. per sq. section. Each casting has a spring seat with itscenter 18 in. from the end axle. The totalwheel base is 9 ft. This arrangement ofthe side frames makes for perfect verticalflexibility and adaptation to any inequal-ities of the track. The bolsters are all united in a singlecasting which has the central equalizingbolster and the two cross bolsters, whoseends rest on the springs. The sections ofthe several cross pieces are U-shaped, in-verted, and the longitudinal or wheel pieceis a single plate. The equalizing bolstercho
