Carlos Sanchez infrared telescope. This metre telescope is situated at an altitude of over 2400 metres on the Mount Teide volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain. The telescope was built by the UK, entering service in 1972. It is now operated by the Spanish. Telescopes are placed at high altitude to put them above the clouds and the majority of the turbulent atmosphere.
