Lanercost Priory, the remains of an Augustine Priory, in the Cumbrian countryside less than half a mile from Hadrian's Wall.
Lanercost Priort is situated in the Cumbrian countryside close to Hadrian's Wall and the border with Scotland. The Priory was founded between 1165 and 1174 by Robert de Vaux.(1169 is viewed as the most likely date.) It was occupied by the Augustinian Order. The bulk of the present remains date from the 13th Century when a further phase of building took place. The Priory is constructed of stone, much of it robbed from nearby Hadrian's Wall, just half a mile away. A number of Roman inscriptions are incorporated into the fabric. Its proximity to Scotland meant it saw a number of raiders and visiting armies during its past. It was dissolved in 1538 and was one of many that suffered a similar fate under Henry VIII. The priory was stripped of its roof and left to decay. Fortunately the adjacent Parish Church was spared so that worship could continue there.
