Cupping marks from cupping therapy applied to a 24-year-old woman with back pain by an alternative medicine practitioner. The circular macular areas of haemorrhage are caused by heat suction on the skin during cupping therapy. This treatment uses burning cotton or paper in special cups laid on the skin surface to create suction. An ancient form of alternative medicine still in use, it is thought to be effective for certain conditions such as muscular pain. These dark circles appear at the sites where the cups were placed. The dark colour is due to blood that pools following rupture of capillaries in the skin. Such discolouration is sometimes referred to as bruising, though it is not painful and can also be considered a form of ecchymosis.
