The Garden, Thirlestane Castle, Lauder, Scottish Borders

Originally the site of a fort, by ca. 1590 a turreted block at the centre of an artillery fortification, 1670-7 Sir William Bruce supervised its transformation to a palace, through remodelling by Robert Mylne for the Duke of Lauderdale using craftsmen who worked on his English residence at Ham House. Much of its skyline down to alterations by William Burn and later David Bryce 1840-41.
