Joseph Louis Francois Bertrand (1822-1900), French mathematician. Bertrand was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and its secretary for many years. He worked on probability and number theory, and the application of calculus to geometry. He also worked on economic theory, publishing what is now known as the Bertrand competition model. Several other theories and paradoxes are named after him. He also translated into French works by the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.
