The pain of fractions a little black schoolgirl having difficulty with her schoolwork innumeracy mental block numbers figures

Little girl looking worried at the thought of having to multiply fractions. Many children and adults struggle to grasp large and small numbers. Innumeracy is not as hot a topic as illiteracy. John Allen Paulos, the mathematician who wrote the best-selling book Innumeracy says that many Americans are "innumerants" who squeak by with just enough math to get out of school and then cover their ears and hum when presented with anything more mathematically complex than balancing a checkbook. He defined innumeracy as "an inability to deal comfortably with the fundamental notions of number and chance."
