Chislehurst May Queen members and mothers wait in the rain for th procession at Pratt's Bottom

The procession and crowning of the May Queen at Pratt's Bottom near Orpington is the central event of the village's annual fete. As well as a cadet marching band and Miss Bromley, the procession also included May Queen groups from Green Street Green, Orpington and Pett's Wood as well as Pratts Bottom itself (Residents of Pratt's Bottom usually prefer it without the apostrophe.) Pratt's Bottom seems very much out in the country and its May Queen group seems to be the outermost among the groups which take part in the London May Queen. Fortunately the rain stopped and the sun came out for the procession up the hill to the Fete, but the band at the front set a cracking pace, probably to warm themselves up, and the smaller members of the Queens' retinues had a job keeping up. At the top of the hill was the usual fete around the green and in a brief ceremony this year's Pratt's Bottom May Queen was crowned by last year's queen, after which Miss Bromley officially opened the fete.
