Balloon angioplasty. Coloured X-ray of a balloon catheter (purple) being inflated in the coeliac trunk of a patient with stenosis (narrowing) of that artery. The balloon catheter is guided into place by a flexible catheter (green). Inflating the balloon opens the artery and restores normal blood flow. The coeliac artery serves the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, intestines and pancreas. The most common cause of stenosis is atheroma, fatty deposits that thicken the inner coat of arteries.
