Paper chromatography test sheet. Chromatogram sheet with a mixture of components on one side and a standard reference spot beside one of the component spots. This technique is used to determine what is in an unknown sample. As the water diffuses upwards, it carries various component molecules along with it. The higher the solubility of the molecule in water, the further up the paper it travels. This can then be cross-referenced with known samples to determine the identity of the substance.
