Moon crater. Apollo 13 spacecraft view of a large impact crater near the Mare Marginalis in the north- east part of the Moon, superimposed on a starfield. Bright lines of material ejected during the impact radiate out from the crater. Large impacts by asteroids or comet cores on the Moon may jettison some rocks into space which later fall to Earth. The Moon's surface is billions of years old, and has accumulated many impact craters during its history; the largest impact basins are several hundred kilometres across. The Earth has experienced similar bombardments, but weathering and geological processes have destroyed most of the evidence.
