Loch Laggan Inverness-shire
The loch boasts the largest fresh water beach in the country and, on its southern shore, the major location of the series, the splendid Victorian pile of Ardverikie. Queen Victoria spent her first long highland holiday here in1847 but (allegedly) was driven to distraction by the midges. I know the feeling! The house is privately owned - please respect the privacy of its occupants - but a fine view can be had across the loch from the lay-by on the main road. Spectacular scenery like the waterfalls, which have been featured in various films and television programmes. Photographers have a unique opportunity to get close to the birds and wildlife which consists of red squirrels, red deer, roe deer, foxes, badgers, bats and frogs. The estate is conservation conscious and encourages the wildlife in it's natural habitat such as peat bogs, pinewoods and heather moorland. The estate offers a variety of different walks including rock climbing and three munroes. The Ardverikie Wall has been used by climbers training for Mount Everest. Detailed Ordinance Survey maps are in the holiday houses. For mountaineers there is Creag Meagaidh National Nature Reserve on the north side of Loch Laggan, and Ben Alder to the south. The Ardverikie Wall also known as Binnein Shuas, a 620 feet (186 meter), graded Severe - (French grade 4) wall, overlooking the Lochan na h-Earba will appeal to experienced rock climbers. During the winter months - November to end of March and with prior arrangement through the estate office, tenants may go out with a stalker to feed the stags on the hill. Visitors to Ardverikie will have ample opportunity for birdwatching. Birds found on the estate are golden eagle, buzzard, songbirds, Greylag geese, owls, swans, Ospreys, Meganza, grouse, pheasant and if you're really lucky you may even see Capercaillie. Loch Laggan has a beautiful sandy beach and guests may swim in the loch. The beach is close to all the holiday houses. During the fishing season, tenants
