Rembrandtstwo brothers-indaw, Copal and Van Loo, werepresent at the christening, together with AeltgenPeters, Sylvius widow. From this time for-ward Saskias strength declined rapidly. Weknow from the etchings that in 1639 she hadgrown thin and ailing, and that her radiant expression had givenplace to an air of mournful foreboding. If we are to accept thetestimony of the so-called Portrait of Saskia, dated 1641, in theDresden Gallery (No. 1562 in the catalogue), she must have recoveredfor a while. The strongly illuminated face that confronts the spec-tator in this portrait beams with health ; the cheeks are round andblooming
