The central tower rises to one hundred and eightyfeet, and its summit is four hundred feet above the level of theriver. High up in this tower stands a large tower-clock, whosehammer strikes on a sweet-toned bell of twelve hundred andtwenty-eight pounds weight. The clock was put in position May22, 1877, the day on which the Golden Jubilee of the late HolyFather was celebrated. It was made to strike fifty times on thatjoyous occasion.
