This Sculpture, by Joanna Szuwalska, entitled “Spirit of Portland, is carved out of a single block of Portland Stone. It represents two of the main industries traditional on the Isle of Portland, fishing and stone quarrying. There are two large rugged figures, one a fisherman hauling a lobster pot from the sea, the other a quarryman or stone mason working with the tools of his craft. The sculpture is situated next to an overlook, near the top of the hill at Portland Heights, which commands spectacular views looking westward along the Dorset coast in the direction of the setting sun.
