Many of the small islands situated near the large island ofKadiak have been leased for a term of years from the UnitedStates government by various fur companies, who have stockedthem with silver-gray foxes. It is customary to keep a manon each of the small islands to prevent the foxes from beingmolested by hunters. In the course of a trip along theAlaskan coast I had an opportunity to visit several of thesehired hermits. Ugak Island, like most of those selected for the breedingof foxes, is small. It contains only about sixteen squaremiles. lyike the main island of Kadiak, it consists of highmountains barren of trees, but covered with a dense
