A steam cylinder of novel design, adopted by BollinckxcS: Co., of Brussels, is shown in The Engineer, fromwhich we reproduce the cut. As shown, the cylinder is inthree pieces and is steam jacketed, the jackets serving as thesteam chest. Steam is admitted to the barrel jacket at thetop and passes to the heads, thus making the jacket of thebarrel act as a separator. The admission valves are of the. Corliss type but being placed across the end of the cylinderthe clearance space is very much reduced. The exhaustvalves are of the piston type and move in the direction ofthe axis of the cylinder; when closed the piston is flush withthe head of the cylinder. The clearance by this design isreduced to less than i per cent, and the surface which isalternately heated and cooled is a minimum, with consequentsmaller loss from cylinder condensation. The valves andvalve chests are of hard cast iron and the wear is said to bevery slight. (^ticd/i^\ailM^j^yic^ 237 ELECTRIC SNOW PLOW AND LOCO-MOTIVE. Unlike most snow plows the one built this last winter bythe Akron, Bedford & Cleveland Railroad does not restinactive during the summer months, but, with the snowscrapers removed, serves as a locomotive, and is used forhauling excursion trains from various steam roads to SilverLake, a summer resort located on the A., B. & C.
