The barrage on the river Couesnon, which uses hydraulic barriers to control the waters, near to Mont St Michel in France

The canalisation of the river Couesnon has slowed its flow and altered the flow around the Mont, as a result it is silting up. If nothing is done the Mont will cease to be an island. In 2006 "Projet Mont-Saint-Michel" began, with the construction of a hydraulic dam. By controlling the waters of the river Couesnon and the tides, it is hoped that the waters will remove the accumulated silt deposited by the rising tides, and to make Mont-Saint-Michel an island again.
