1861 WHITBY LIFEBOAT DISASTER - The gravestone of John Storr (coxwain) one of the 11 crew who drowned - During a severe storm on 9 February 1861, a Whitby lifeboat capsized, throwing the crew overboard. All except one had wife / children. Only one member of the crew, Henry Freeman, survived because he was wearing a new cork lifejacket. John Storr and the rest of his crewmen drowned. 200 ships were lost on the east coast
