About eleven oclock Beynons party were seenon the hillside flanking the enemy, and the gunsopened on the enemys sungars, who were unableto face the shells and fell back hurriedly to anotherline of sunofars, a little to the rear. The euns wereadvanced and again brought to bear upon them,when they fled precipitately, leaving twenty-fivekilled and fifty wounded. Colonel Kellys forcehaving five men wounded, but none killed. In his. CHAKLEWAT 131 telegraphic despatch, dated the loth April, ColonelKelly says :— I marched to Gasht on the 8th, with 200Pioneers, 40 Kashmir Sappers, 2 guns, i KashmirMountain Battery, and 50 Hunza levies. The gunswere carried by coolies. On arrival in camp, onproceeding to a hill in front, I saw the enemy atwork on sungars, three miles ahead at Chaklewat,called Darband in the map. Lieutenant Beynon,on going forward to higher hills with a few Hunzalevies, discovered that they had constructed severalsungars on the left bank of the river. He imme-diately sent back for Raja Akbar Khan, with 50Punial levies. On the morning of the 9th instant,I sent the Hunza levies on a hicjh hill on the leftbank of the river, to work towards the rear of thesungars, and the Punial levies on the hills to theright to turn out the men prepared to roll stonesdown should we proceed by the right bank of theriver.
