Front End of the Rock Island 2-10-2 Type Locomotives with theSecurity Spark Arrester. for a load of 60,000 lb. on each pair of drivers. They areintended to traverse 16 deg. curves and have lateral mo-tion driving bo-xes on the front a.\le. Both the front andrear pairs of driving wheels are fitted with Detroit flangelubricators. The clearances permitted the application of a boiler oflarge capacity. The boiler horsepower is per cent of thecylinder horsepower rating. In the design of the boiler fewinnovations have been introduced. It is of the conical ex-tended wagon top type with a 5-ft. 4-in. combustion chamberand tubes and flues 24-in. and 5J<2-in. in diameter respec-tively. 21 ft. 5 in. long. A type A superheater with 46 units is applied. The firebox has a Security arch and is fired bya Duplex stoker. The grates are operated by the Franklinpower grate shaker. The Security spark arrester which has been in use forseveral years on the Rock Island Lines is used. This con-sists of
