Closeup of steamed green Tortoise Cakes or Ang Ku Kueh on banana leaf, a Chinese pastry made from glutinous rice flour, seen here with coconut filling

Red Tortoise Cake or Ang Ku Kueh is a small round or oval-shaped Chinese pastry with soft, sticky glutinous rice flour skin wrapped around a sweet central filling, steamed on a piece of banana leaf. Molded to resemble a tortoise shell, they are traditionally red in color and auspicious items, especially prepared during important festivals such as Chinese New Year as offerings to the Chinese deities.
