The works upon this portion of the South Thames Embankment com-prise a length of about 2,200 feet of river wall between Westminster andLambeth Bridges, and a further stretch of 2,100ft. from Lambeth to nearthe gasworks. With slight exceptions the wall is of a uniform that on the Middlesex side, it is built on concrete faced withgranite, instead of brick with a granite facing. In both cases, however, the walls are of equal strength, and have a similar inward curve. Botha re finished with the greatest perfection of workmanship, and have amoulded parapet and plinth which is broken at intervals of about plain pedestals. To these are to be affixed the massive-lookincbronze lions heads and mooring-rings which already form such conspicuousornaments on the Middlesex shore. The foundations of the wall are carried down to a depth of 30ft. belowTrinity high water, and it is intended to excavate the foreshore to the. known law that friction produces heat, and Messrs. Ingram and Stapferhave, consequently, designed an instrument to measure the amount of heatgenerated under a certain amount of pressure and speed. The method of doing this is very simple, and will be readily understoodfrom the illustration. It consists of a spindle running in bearings at eachend, fitted on a suitable bed plate, and driven by a strap working on fastand loose pulleys, and having a counter at the end to show the number ofrevolutions. To this spindle is fitted a pair of brasses, which are adjustedto the required pressure by weighted levers, the top brass being fittedwith a thermometer: In order to try the commercial value of any oil, a standard should firstbe established by which to compare the others. Taking, for instanceGallipoli oil as the standard; upon testing it with the machine it wasfound that with three drops the spindle made 110,000 revolutions, and extent of 18ft. below the same datum.
