He was thesecond son of Matthew Church, a merchant of theCity of Cork. His mother was a daughter of JohnDearman, of Braithwaite, Yorkshire. His parents weremembers of the Society of Friends, and he was broughtup in their persuasion. Before he was sixteen years ofage, he ran away from school, and enlisted : but, hisfather bought a commission for him in the 13th Foot,with which Regiment he went through the Campaignin Egypt in 1801, being present at the capture of Cairoand Al
