An analy-sis of the pedigree of Diomed shows that he inheritedseven crosses of Darley Arabian, six of Byerley Turkand two of Godolphin Arabian. Diomed began racing as a three-year-old. He gainedconsiderable distinction by winning the first Derbyever run in England. There were six other starters inthis race. He also won four other good races thatseason, and received several forfeits. He was racedsuccessfully as a four-year-old. He was on the turf 32. THE ENGLISH RACE HORSE. four seasons, but was not so successful the last twoseasons as the first two, although the last season outhe won an excellent race for four-mile heats after losingthe first to Lottery. Diomed went lame in his seven-year-old form, and was retired from the turf. He waskept for stock purposes in England until 1799, whenhe was sold for fifty guineas, but was bought not longafterward by Col. James Hoomes of Virginia for onethousand guineas. He died the property of ColonelHoomes in 1808, being then thirty-one years old. Though handicapped with an infirmity Diomed wasmore successful in England as a sire and perpetuatorof race winning speed than was Mambrino, the sire ofimported Messenger.
