The Convocations of Canterbury and York were assemblies of the bishops and clergy that go back to the ecclesiastical reorganisation carried out under Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury in the 7th Century. After 1295 a representative body of the clergy summoned to attend Parliament, the beginning of a new phase in the struggle waged by the Crown on the subject of the taxation of the clergy. In 1296 the members of Convocation resolved themselves into four groups: bishops, monastic representatives, dignitaries and proctors of the clergy, but the struggle continued until 1337.
