He waselected a representative in congress from Wilkescounty from 1817 to 1825, serving as a member ofthe committee on commerce and the slave trade. Hedied at Washington, Ga., Nov. 19, 1836. LOCKWOOD, Mary Smith, author andWorlds Fair commissioner, was born in Hanover,Chaiutauqua Co., N. Y., Oct. 34, 1831. She wasthe daughter of Henry and Beu-lah (Blodgett) Smith, and has beenthe mother of two children. She losther son at the age of thirteen; herdaughter has grown to a child she had an eager, inquisi-tive mind, and early manifested aninterest in literary pursuits. Her firstpublication was a Hand Book ofCeramic Art. Her most valuablecontribution to literature is TheHistoric Homes of Washington; awork of absorbing interest and greatmerit.
