Spiral galaxy. Artist's impression of a spiral galaxy with a central black hole. Galaxies of this type are disc-shaped, with a central bulge of stars and spiral arms. The central core contains old, yellow stars; the spiral arms are the site of star formation, with pink nebulae and hot young blue stars. Astronomers believe that many spiral galaxies revolve around a colossal black hole at the centre, including our own, the Milky Way.
