A circa 1941 photograph showing the refurbished British oil tanker M V 'Imperial Transport' capable of carrying 12,500 tons of oil. Earlier because of the British government investment in many of the early tankers the first ships bore the prefix 'British' not 'Imperial' . The British Tanker Company Limited (BTC) was launched in April 1915 . With the outbreak of WWII, the British government chartered BTC's whole fleet of 93 vessels to transport fuel ( crude and refined oil products including fuel oil, benzine and kerosine) to for its armed forces.
