Its organization dates from February 3,of that year, and was originally intended to have been com-posed of two Pennsylvania regiments, the Twenty-third andSixty-first, two New York regiments and one each from Maine and Wisconsin, but for somereasons the Twenty-third wasassigned to other duty andthe Light Division organized—Sixth Maine, Fifth Wisconsin,Thirty-first and Forty-thirdNew York, Sixty-first Pennsyl-vania and Harns Light Batteryof New York, the whole com-manded by General Piatt of NewYork. During the preparationfor the spring campaign no un-usual event marked the historyof the Division, snugly quar-tered near Belle Plains Land-ing, well fed and clothed (forHooker was an excellent quar-termaster), no picket duty tosupplied sutlers tent.
