The monument of the Sixteenth Maine Regiment, a simple graniteobelisk twenty-four feet high, stands on Seminary Ridge north of theChambersburg Pike, on the ground where the regiment fought for nearlythree hours in the afternoon before it was ordered up to the MummasburgRoad, and where it met with its principal loss in killed and one face of the obelisk is the coat of arms of the State of Maine, uponanother draped flags, and upon a third side the badge of the First Corpswith this inscription: 16th Me. Brig. 2d. 1st, 1863 fought herefrom 1 oclock until 4 p. the division was forcedto retire, by command ofgen. robinson to col. tildenthe regiment was moved tothe right, near the mummas-burg road, as indicated bya marker there, with ordersto hold the position at ANY COST.
