Angliae Descriptio. England, Wales & Scotland. Great Britain. MÜNSTER 1572 map

Angliae Descriptio [England, Wales and part of Scotland]. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Sebastian Münster. Provenance: "Cosmographiae Universalis Lib VI. In Quibus Iuxta Certioris Fidei Scriptores…" Authore Sebastiano Munstero. Cum Gratia & Privilegio Caes. Maiest. Basileae, ex Officina Henricpetrina. Type: Antique 16th century woodcut map. An early map of England and Wales, with part of Scotland and Ireland. A table gives a list of place names in Latin with English translations. The national flags of England and Scotland are shown. The accuracy of rendering of the smaller British islands is erratic - the Isle of Man is oversized, Grenze (Guernsey) is far adrift of a truncated Cotentin peninsula, while Jersey is missing. Anglesey and the Isle of Wight both appear to have phantom companions. Thanet is shown as an island adrift of England. Lundy is missing. The map is orientated towards the East
