Bachitherium fossil. This extinct mammal was a primitive gazelle-like ruminant. It dates from the Oligocene epoch (34 to 23 million years ago). The fossil of its skull has preserved teeth details, showing that it was a herbivore. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This fossil was found near Cereste, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region of France.
