16/06/22 After Ukraine, Russia and Belarus left the steel market, Heaton Manufacturing, in Grangewood, Derbyshire is one of a number of smaller UK manufacturers now being forced to commit to larger bulk-purchases for their raw materials. They are now sourcing the raw materials needed to make their steel mesh and rebar (reinforcement steel) from Spain, Turkey and India. Director Ashley Rouse said: “We're a £1M - £5M company having to invest £750,000 in stock from the major steel importers because we're not able to purchase from the normal channels, which is unheard of for a company of our size. “The supply issue is a continuation from reduced supply during the Covid lockdowns, when India and China shutdown production. From late March the UK steel suppliers wouldn't quote us as they expected imports to cease within weeks and were retaining stocks for their larger clients - the big UK construction companies.” The firm’s investment has bolstered stock levels to double the amount they would normally hold. Over the last two years Heaton Manufacturing has grown from two to 20 employees and has also invested £100K in machinery. All Rights Reserved: F Stop Press Ltd. +44 (0)7765 242650
