First Lieutenant William Picton's A-4C Skyhawk from Marine Fighter-Attack Squadron (VMA)-223, based in Chu Lai, made a forced landing in Phu Bai during the Vietnam War. After experiencing fire warning lights and fumes in the cockpit, Picton decided to land at Phu Bai instead of flying to Da Nang. Marine Aircraft Group-36 crash crew quickly extinguished the fire. The aircraft was stopped by a mobile arresting cable (MOREST) stretched across the runway. Photograph taken by SSgt Bill Graham.
