Statue of Homer 'the blind bard', author of the epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Iliad is set during the final weeks of the 10 year long Trojan War, the Odyssey recounts the journey of the hero Odysseus back to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. Most scholarly opinion places Homer in the 8th century BC. It is possible that the poems were orally transmitted with little deviation until they were written down in the sixth century. This is a digitally re-textured sculpture based the 2nd century Roman original in the British Museum.
