There was a day when the run from Albany toSchenectady was the longest continuous railroadride that a traveler might take. Today it is possibleto travel in a Pullman car without change fromWashington, D. C, to San Francisco, a distance of3,625 miles, requiring one hundred and eighteenhours, or approximately five days. From Greensboro to Raleigh, NorthCarolina, for instance, a distance of only eighty-onemiles, Pullman sleeping cars are regularly , as in many other instances, arrangements existwhereby the passengers may retire early in the even-ing while the car is at rest on a siding in the station,and arise at a reasonable hour in the morning. Bysuch service hotel accommodations are practicallyafforded and it becomes possible for the travelers tohave a whole day for pleasure or business at oneplace, spend a night in which a hundred or fivehundred miles are traversed, and arrive withoutfatigue at another place the following morning.
