There should be no difficulty in main- taining a suitable temperature for let- tuce in the 28x54-foot houses with the present radiation. In fact, twelve 2-inch returns should be ample. If the 5-inch flow and return pipes to the 170-foot house are run through one of the 28x54- foot houses, it would be possible to cut off several ^ore of the returns by means of valves or they could be taken out, provided heat will be kept up in the new house at all times. As we figure it, if two 3-inch flows and fourteen 2-inch returns are used in the new house it will make only 1,800 square feet of radiation, if the main How and return to the boiler are cov- ered. This can be handled by a 5-inch flow, with a return of the same size. We would, however, consider the two 3-inch flow pipes loaded to capacity. Our suggestion would be to pipe the two houses as one, thus making a run of 224 feet. Use the 5-inch flow as the main for this house and then run three .'Mnch overhead flows, with one on each plate and the other below the ridge. At the farther end of the house con- nect each flow pipe with three 2i4-inch returns. The other 28x54-fo6t house may be connected with the boiler by means of a 3-inch flow and return. While we prefer 2iA-inch pipe for re- turns in houses more than 200 feet in length, if there is no other use for the fourteen 2-inch returns in the 28x54- foot house, they might be used for three runs each 224 feet long and with seven runs of a 2i^-inch pipe will furnish the necessary radiation.
