This restored image of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing, shows the legendary surfer from Honolulu with his wooden surfboard on the beach, circa 1912. Born at Haleakala, Duke was also an Olympic swimmer and won five Olympic medals, receiving his first gold medal in 1912. Kahanamoku was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Olympic Hall of Fame.
