Bell and Hammer (or ‘Whitehorse’ – in Germany ‘Glocke und Hammer’ or Schimmel) is a dice game, which was popular in Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The game’s equipment consists of 5 illustrated cards (bell and hammer, white horse, inn, hammer and bell), wood or ivory cubes or dice (numbered or with a bell or hammer motif but also with blank sides), a dice box and a bag of counters.

The game’s equipment consists of 5 illustrated cards (bell and hammer, white horse, inn, hammer and bell), wood or ivory cubes or dice (numbered or with a bell or hammer motif but also with blank sides), a dice box and a bag of counters. The counters that each player has are used to ‘purchase’ cards by an auction. A throw of the dice by a player will have blanks, numbers and/or the bell or hammer cubes come up. Other players will pay up in counters whatever is owed to the dice thrower. The aim is to gather as many counters as possible until the bag is emptied. The Viennese art dealer Heinrich Friedrich Müller (1779–1848) popularised the game, but was probably not the inventor. It was a popular pastime during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. After the World War II the game almost completely disappeared.
