False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the spherical bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. These gram-positive bacteria are commonly found on healthy human skin & on mucous membranes such as the lining of the mouth. They may, however, cause boils, usually by entering through a hair follicle or a break in the skin. They are also responsible for internal abscesses & any acute suppurative infection. They are commonly found in grape-like clusters. Magnification: x7000 at size.
