Recreational Use In 1969, out-of-State tourists in Montana, excluding transportation, were estimated to support a $ million industry (Mussehl and Howell 1971). A substantial share of these dollars were, no doubt, spent by visitors traveling to forested parts of the State. Other dollars were spent for second homes, recreation sites, and activities that depend upon nearby forests to provide desirable settings. Twelve Montana counties increased in population by more than 10 percent be- tween 1960 and 1970 (fig. 32). Most of these counties lie in forested western.
