The Creusot engineers, underthe direction of the Navy Department, made a careful exami-nation as to the best method of constructing these trucks. Itwas originally intended that they should be built of wood andiron. The wooden cradles were to turn in arcs of a circlemade of iron resting upon the bolster of a truck, just as longtimbers are now carried on cars. The trucks and cradles asfinally built were made entirely of metal, as shown in figs. 1to 4 ; the angle which the cradle could describe was verysmall
