Caged for the past 23 years at the Straja Ski and Snowboarding Resort in Hunedoara, Romania. ‘Baloo’ the red bear is held as a mascot and fed cornflakes, candy, lemonade and even given alcohol to drink and at times taunted by children with sticks. His situation was publicized recently by Dutch TV and Television presenter Floortje Dessing. ‘World Animal Protection NL’, handed a petition with 178,000 signatures to the Romanian Secretary of State with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forestry Dan Stefan Chiru. The Romanian authorities want to free ‘Baloo’ and relocate him to sanctuary for bears, but they have legal obstacles and his relocation is not that simple.
