Kunene river at Serra Cafema Kaokoland Kunene region Namibia The Damaraland and Kaokoland zones now knows as the Kunene region are defined as the mountainous escarpment regions of Namibia Although much of Namibia is covered with recent deposits of sand and calcretes the northwest is different This area is mostly mountainous with a few plains covered with groups of rocks known as the Damara Sequence which was formed approximately 850 500 million years ago The geology in western Namibia is very similar to the geology of South America although seperated by a thousand miles and both are characterised by the similarity of the massive basaltic lava flows
