For early plants sow in hotbeds eaily in Marcln, in drills 5 inches apart and J inch deep; when the plants are about 2 inches high, transplant into another hotbed 4 inches apart each way; plant out in the open ground early in May, or as soon as danger from frost is over, 4 feet apart each way in hills, which should have a shovelful of well-rotled manure mixed with the soil. Water freely at time of transplanting; when the lirst fruit is set, pinch off the ends of the branches to obtain early fruit. Sufficient plants for a imall garden can be grown in a shallow box or large fiower-pot by placing it in a sunny window in a warm room or kitchen. For late use sow m a sheltered border in May, and set out the plants in July ; the green fruit can be picked off before' frost and ripened under glass.
