When he purchased his ranch he set it out to grapes, and these having provena failure, he set out walnuts. When he found that the soil was not adapted to theirgrowth, he put in apricots, and after testing the foregoing fruits, he planted oranges,succeeding at last with his latest venture. Mr. Jones has been a member of the SantiagoOrange Growers Association since its organization. SKIDMORE.—A native son of the Golden State, Joseph W. Skid-more of Laguna Beach, was born in Los Angeles on September 9, 1891, a son ofGeorge E. and Catherine A. (^Brenizer) Skidmore. George E. Skidmore was born inLamar County, Texas, on November 10, 1846, was a prospector and an explorer andwas one of the first to blaze a trail through Death Valley and, like others bent onscientifically studying the unknown parts of the earth and in time paying a fearfulprice for their intrusion upon untamed Nature, Mr. Skidmores life was shortenedthrough exposure. He was married in 1882 and the family lived in Newhall, thenRiverside, and finally moved to Santa Fe Springs in the hope of benefiting his health,but he died there on March 26, 18
