A woman talking on mobile phone in public fountain in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. This huge park that today saxophonists , blues singers , tourists and college chess players congregate at all hours , was once a marshy area in which people are challenged to duels, executions and even had practiced served as a mass grave. The Washington Square Park Park is one of the most popular parks in the city of New York among 1,700 public parks. It has acres ( 39,500 m2), is a landmark in the Manhattan neighborhood in the suburb of Greenwich Village, as well as a meeting place and center for cultural activity. Is careful and controlled by the City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation. It is an open space with a long tradition , the source of the park has long been one of the popular places in the city for residents and tourists. Most of the buildings surrounding the park now belong to New York University . Some of the buildings have been built by the University of New York, and others have been converted from their former uses in residential and academic buildings. The university rents the park for its graduation ceremonies, and use the bow as a symbol. New York University wants the park to be the core of the school campus. Already in 1922 the Chancellor announced that the university would take over the park for their own use , but so far that has not happened . The local residents consider the park as an essential part of the neighborhood , and have mounted campaigns to preserve it.
