Erected in 1404, the 10 metre high statue is reputedly Germany's tallest representation of the knight. A symbol of civic freedom, it faces the cathedral and archbishops who had threatened the citizens privileges. The Gothic Rathaus (Town Hall) was built 1405 - 1409, though the Weser Renaissance style balcony by Lüder von Bentheim was added between 1609 - 1612.
