The gilded statue of winged Victory, by the sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot, atop it’s column looking down over the Place du Châtelet in Paris. France.
This gilded bronze statue of Victory was created in 1806 by the sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot in bombastic Empire style, to celebrate Napoleon’s return from Egypt. The heroic, golden winged goddess stands upon an 18 metre tall column which represents the trunk of a palm tree, and forms the centerpiece of an elaborate fountain, the Fontaine du Palmier. Bands of bronze gilt lettering around the column pay tribute to French victories in battle. In particular in this image we can see the word “Dantzick”, referring to the Siege of Danzig of 1807 against Prussia. The whole edifice was erected in 1808 in the Place du Châtelet, right in the heart of Paris. It is one of a series of fifteen fountains commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, and is the largest to have survived from this period.
